As of late, a puzzling trend has developed concerning my brown hat. While I am very fond of this hat, I have accepted that there remains a small percentage of the public that thinks it is "unfashionable" or "ridiculous". I have chosen to ignore their snide remarks and continue to strut up and down the streets sporting this accessory. However, in the past month, several very similar comments have been made to me, regarding the brown hat. First it was "Look at you, stylin' in that hat. You’re wearin’ that hat and you KNOW you’re wearin’ it!" At the time, I was waiting in line to get dinner at the Buckeye Express, and I agreed with the woman that I was, indeed, wearing the hat. Not long after, a different employee of the OSU cafeteria staff took one look at me and said "Look at you girl, all in that hat. You got on your hat like you don't even care, don't you?" At this point, I was not sure whether to take this as a compliment or a reprimand. I thanked her anyways and went on my way. Now, just last week, I returned to the dining hall and encountered a man serving scrambled eggs who glanced in my direction, then remarked to a fellow worker, "Look at her in that hat..." I looked at him from under the hat and smiled, at which point he began nodding his head saying "Yeah that's right, you know you're wearin' that hat." I did know. I knew all too well.
I now have to wonder, is it the brown hat that I purchased for 4.95 at J.Crew that is eliciting all the talk, or is it me, the fabled girl in the hat? Have I done something that warrants all this attention? Do all the cafeteria workers talk about me? Did they script their comments to me or is just a common courtesy to tell someone when they are, in fact, wearing a hat? I have so many questions going unanswered.
